CV sales September 2026 broke a record that's stood for years. Dealers registered 1,03,557 commercial vehicles, up 37.6% on last September, the first time a September has crossed one lakh. Heavy trucks grew fastest, up 46%.
If you're buying this festive season, that's the problem. When demand is this strong, discounts get thin and waiting periods get longer.
The FADA retail data shows every segment growing, but not at the same speed. Heavy commercial vehicles rose 46.2% to 32,310 units. Light commercial vehicles, still the biggest slice, rose 34.1% to 62,398. Medium trucks added 34% to reach 8,789.
Month on month, retail was up 14% on August, which was itself a record. Rural sales grew 40% while urban grew 35%, so the demand isn't just coming from city logistics. Also, FADA points to infrastructure and mining work, replacement buying and the lower 18% GST rate as the main drivers.
Fuel mix is worth a look too. Diesel still took 80.8% of CV retail, CNG 12.1% and electric just 4%. In fact, the EV share slipped from 5.2% in August, because the extra volume came mostly from diesel HCVs.
Retail tells you what buyers took home. Wholesale, on the other hand, tells you what makers are pushing to dealers for the festive season. Both moved sharply this month.
| Maker (Sept 2026 wholesale) | Units | Growth |
|---|---|---|
| Tata Motors (domestic CV) | 43,487 | +31.2% |
| Mahindra (domestic CV) | 30,420 | +14% |
| Ashok Leyland (domestic) | 22,157 | +29% |
| VECV (domestic) | 10,479 | +57.5% |
Tata stayed far ahead, with 34.7% of retail and 35,931 units. Its HCV truck dispatches jumped 43.6% to 14,171, while SCV cargo and pickups, the Ace and Intra range, rose 17% to 16,510.
Ashok Leyland's M&HCV trucks rose 44% to 13,244. Meanwhile, VECV was the standout on growth, because its Eicher light and medium trucks grew 62%. Mahindra's Bolero pickups in the 2–3.5 tonne range added 13% to 26,376 units.
A record month is great news for makers. For you, though, it changes the bargaining. When dealers can sell every truck in the yard, they don't need to discount.
Expect waiting periods on popular HCV tractors and tippers, especially in the 28–35 tonne range used for mining and infra work. Also expect slimmer cash discounts on pickups through Diwali. On the other hand, smaller and slower-moving models may still carry deals, so ask about stock in hand rather than only the model you walked in for.
Finance is also getting costlier. The RBI raised the repo rate this week, so check what the hike adds to your CV loan EMI before you lock a deal.
If you run pickups for kirana or e-commerce deliveries, the 34% LCV growth means your segment is busy but not overheated. Plenty of models compete here, from the Bolero Maxx to the Intra and the Dost, so you still have room to bargain.
Tipper and haulage buyers have less leverage. HCV growth of 46% is coming from road, mining and replacement demand, and most of it is concentrated in a few popular configurations. So if you need a 10-wheeler for a contract that starts in November, lock the chassis and body-builder slot now.
Electric buyers are in a different spot. The EV share fell to 4%, which means dealers of electric pickups and small trucks are not seeing the same rush. In practice, that's the one corner of the market where you may still get a decent deal this month.
In August, CV retail hit 90,769, then a record, with Tata at 33%. So in a single month, Tata added more than a point of share, and the market added about 12,800 vehicles. That's a big jump for a month that usually slows down during Pitru Paksha.
FADA says October should be stronger still, as Navratri and Dussehra bookings turn into deliveries. As a result, the market may well beat this record next month.
Retail was 1,03,557 units, up 37.62% year on year, according to FADA. It's the first September above one lakh.
Tata Motors, with 35,931 retail units and a 34.7% share. Mahindra and Ashok Leyland followed.
About 4.04% of retail, down from 5.18% in August. Diesel took 80.76% and CNG/LPG 12.07%.
Demand is at a record, so waiting periods are likely on popular heavy trucks. Check with your dealer for the exact model.
