Three-wheeler sales had their best August ever in 2026, even though July was bigger. Makers shipped 93,764 three-wheelers to dealers, 22.8% more than a year earlier, according to SIAM. Meanwhile, FADA counted 1,22,281 registrations, up 8.64%. Also, almost two in three were electric.
The growth wasn't even, though. Cargo three-wheelers and rural buyers carried the month, while city registrations and passenger e-rickshaws slipped. If you're planning to buy an auto or a loader this festive season, those splits matter more than the headline.
It's worth sorting this out first, because the two totals confuse a lot of people. Firstly, SIAM counts wholesales, meaning vehicles shipped from factory to dealer, and only for its member companies. FADA, on the other hand, counts retail, meaning vehicles actually registered to customers, from every maker. That includes the long tail of small e-rickshaw brands outside SIAM, which is why FADA's number is so much higher.
| Measure (August 2026) | Units | vs August 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| SIAM wholesale, all three-wheelers | 93,764 | +22.8% |
| SIAM wholesale, passenger carriers | 78,680 | +22.4% |
| SIAM wholesale, goods carriers | 13,320 | +34.9% |
| FADA retail, all three-wheelers | 1,22,281 | +8.64% |
Compared with July's 1,33,778, retail actually fell 8.59%, with both rural and urban registrations lower than the month before. Even so, SIAM put the yearly growth down to "resilient rural markets and improving financing conditions", as Autoguide India reported.
| FADA retail segment | August 2026 | vs August 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger three-wheelers (autos) | 72,657 | +23.11% |
| Goods three-wheelers | 14,614 | +42.76% |
| E-rickshaws (passenger) | 28,816 | −22.03% |
| E-rickshaws with cart (goods) | 6,029 | −2.98% |
Goods three-wheelers jumped almost 43%, so loaders are clearly where the demand is. Last-mile delivery and small traders are buying faster than anyone else, and SIAM's wholesale figure for goods carriers (+34.9%) tells the same story.
Passenger e-rickshaws, on the other hand, fell 22% while regular autos rose 23%. That suggests some buyers are skipping the low-speed e-rickshaw and going straight for a full-size electric or CNG auto.
By fuel, FADA's data shows 65.30% of August registrations were electric, while CNG and LPG took 21.50%. Diesel, meanwhile, was down to 12.89%, and petrol barely registered at 0.31%.
So when FADA calls the segment "structurally electric", that's hard to argue with. For you as a buyer, it means service networks, battery swapping, finance schemes and second-hand demand are all following the electric volume. By contrast, diesel three-wheelers are becoming the harder ones to sell on later.
Rural three-wheeler retail grew 23.95% year on year, but urban retail fell 6.95%. Month on month, however, both were lower: rural by 8.20% and urban by 9.12%. So SIAM's point about easier finance fits this pattern well.
| Manufacturer | Retail share, August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Bajaj Auto | 34.84% (42,605 units) |
| Mahindra & Mahindra | 10.94% |
| Mahindra Last Mile Mobility | 10.93% |
| Piaggio | 6.89% |
| TVS Motor | 5.84% |
FADA lists the two Mahindra companies separately, but together they had about 21.9%. So Mahindra is a clear second, while Bajaj alone sold more than a third of every three-wheeler registered in August.
Looking ahead, SIAM expects festive demand to add momentum, according to its August update. So if you're planning to buy, get quotes from two or three dealers now. Then you'll know whether a Dussehra or Diwali "offer" is really any better.
Above all, electric isn't the risky choice any more, because it's now the mainstream one. If you're buying a cargo three-wheeler, book early, because loaders are the fastest-growing part of the market and popular models may have waiting periods by October.
If you own an e-rickshaw and are thinking of upgrading, compare an L5 auto's price, your city's permit rules and the daily earnings side by side before switching. Also, rural buyers should compare bank, NBFC and company-finance offers on rate and down payment, not just the EMI. And keep running costs in mind: after this year's CNG price hike, electric's per-km advantage is bigger than it was in January. Finally, for the wider picture, see our report on CV sales in August 2026.
Prices, EMIs, subsidies and permit rules vary by state and change frequently. Verify with your dealer, lender or RTO before you buy.
SIAM reported 93,764 wholesales (up 22.8%), while FADA reported 1,22,281 retail registrations (up 8.64%), so both were August records.
About two-thirds. FADA says 65.30% of retail registrations in August 2026 were electric, whereas CNG and LPG made up 21.50% and diesel 12.89%.
Bajaj Auto leads with 34.84% of August retail (42,605 units), while the Mahindra group came second with about 21.9% combined.
SIAM counts factory dispatches from its members only, whereas FADA counts customer registrations from all makers, including small e-rickshaw brands.
